From Psychosomatic Symptom to Disease

by Tjitze de Jong, author of Energetic Cellular Healing and Cancer

The word psychosomatic is commonly used in today’s language. Some people know its literal meaning. Others don’t. Let me explain the word in layman’s terms and bridge its two elements step by step with the phenomenon of “energy” as a link.

The element “psycho” can also be found in psychological, i.e., “of the psyche,” “of the mind,” “of the emotions,” or some combination thereof. Psycho concerns itself with how we as individuals handle emotions as well as mindset, our inner image and belief system. How do we express emotions? Or do we suppress our emotions, because according to our mindset it feels inappropriate to utter our feelings at the moment they surface?

We often hold our tears back. We often do not burst out in anger. We are afraid of repercussions from our social surroundings in the form of family or friends avoiding our company, which can leave us feeling abandoned, which, in turn, may trigger buried emotions of abandonment that formed during childhood.

Hence, we hold back our true emotions. It is our ever-so-understandable tendency to try and avoid unpleasantness and unpleasant feelings. We avoid and swallow them, tuck them away, and store them somewhere in our bodies.

These last three words, “in our bodies,” introduce the second element of the term psychosomatic: “somatic,” relating to the body or soma. Unexpressed emotions affect our somatic being, our physique. When that effect lasts only a short while, a few hours or days or weeks, normal daily life and emotions can restore the balance and there’s no damage done. If the effect lasts months or years, or decades, without rebalancing in any shape or form, physical distortions can lead to physical symptoms and illness.

How the process works in actual reality is easily explained when bridging psycho and soma with the third element energy. All living beings are physical, incarnate beings inside an energetic field (aura) with certain energetic centers (chakras). This also counts for us humans.

When we suppress our psychological urges, our emotions, we simultaneously suppress our energetic circulation. It happens automatically. We are not aware of doing this. Energy is vital life force. Suppressing energy suppresses life force and our physique no longer receives enough vital life force to create and maintain health. Our bodies will provide us with signals, subtle symptoms, to inform us that something somewhere and somehow is not quite in order.

It is our own responsibility as individuals to listen to these symptoms, dissect them, and try and unravel their cause.

In Energetic Cellular Healing and Cancer you can read Joanna’s story. She was a successful career woman, who was well liked, enjoyed a loving relationship, and lived a well-balanced life. At least, on the surface. However, almost every night she suffered nightmares. She initially came to my clinic with the presenting complaint of breast cancer. Our intake revealed that she had been sexually abused at some point in her life and had never dealt with the traumatic experience.

Sexual intercourse, also when forced, creates a relational cord between both people. The cord establishes itself in the second energy center or chakra, signifying power, financial matters, as well as sexuality. The disempowering experience of abuse still sat rooted in Joanna’s second chakra through the deeply embedded relational cord of the perpetrator. Why? Simply because the emotional charge of anger and rage had been suppressed for decades.

Joanna lived a successful life and at the same time she sat atop an inner volcano of unexpressed emotions. When I dislodged and removed the relational cord, the volcano erupted. The woman exploded in unbridled rage, swore, cursed, howled and yelled with arms and legs flaying. In total she received four treatments within a week and looked nearly a decade younger at the end of it all.

After the psychological baggage had been released, Joanna's physique, her somatic element, also released its symptoms and her cancer dissolved.

Not every client’s story is this straightforward, definitely not. Still, Joanna showed in a very simple and direct manner the link between psycho, energy, and soma.
